1990 Metal Horse: Which Column Actually Holds Your Day Master?
Before you call Metal "your BaZi element," check which pillar you are reading. The Metal in the familiar 1990 Metal Horse label refers to a year stem. Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem in the Day pillar. Those are two different positions in a Four Pillars chart.

What Metal Horse tells you
The Hong Kong Observatory's 1990 calendar identifies the year as Geng-wu, the year of the Horse. In this label, Geng is the Heavenly Stem and Wu is the Earthly Branch. The traditional Geng-to-Metal classification is recorded in an author's note preserved by Taiwan's National Museum of Taiwan Literature.
That explains the year label. It does not identify the stem of your birth day.
Read the Year and Day columns separately
Year column: Geng-wu is the year-pillar label in this example. Metal describes Geng's traditional Five Phase category.
Day column: its upper character, the Heavenly Stem, is the Day Master. Read the name and Five Phase label attached to that stem in your own calculated chart.
The two positions can have the same Five Phase category. A Metal year label neither establishes nor rules out a Metal Day Master. The point is to identify the correct character, rather than assume that every use of "element" describes the same thing.
A worked example makes the difference visible
YUVYN's fictional teaching chart lists Yi-you in the Year column and Xin-si in the Day column. Xin, in the Day column, is the example's Day Master and is classified as Yin Metal.
Notice that the year stem is Yi while the day stem is Xin. Looking only at the year would point to the wrong character for the Day Master. This is a published teaching example, not a chart for everyone born in 1990 and not a personal reading for you.
Born near the start of the year?
Check the year boundary too. The Observatory's calendar lists Lunar New Year on 27 January 1990 and Spring Commences on 4 February. YUVYN's declared BaZi policy uses the Li Chun solar-term instant for its year boundary. These dates do not supply an exact birth-time cutoff by themselves. Our year-boundary checklist explains how to compare the labels and rules.
Find the Day Master in your own chart
Use your recorded birth date, known local birth time and birthplace to find your Day Master with YUVYN's free English BaZi calculator. Then locate the Day column and read its Heavenly Stem, rather than copying the element from a zodiac-year description.
The current calculator requires a birth time and does not infer an unknown one. If your time is uncertain, look for a reliable record rather than inventing a time to complete the form.
The free calculator shows calculated Four Pillars and the Day Master; it does not generate personal AI interpretation. A personal AI Natal reading is a separate, optional one-time purchase. You can stop with the free chart.
A Day Master label alone does not establish your overall element balance, favorable elements, personality, compatibility or future outcomes. Use the distinction to read the chart structure clearly before evaluating any interpretation.
